News of the Rose

"The opening, expletive-ridden banter is Tarantino-esque in its enterprise in inventing ever more ingenious compounds of genital-referencing abuse . . . there’s much to commend in this sharply accurate portrayal of modern family dysfunctionality that refreshingly steer." -- Paul Teasdale/Camden New Journal

Salsa Saved the Girls, by young, award-winning US playwright Rose Martula, will enjoy its UK premiere at the acclaimed Old Red Lion Theatre.  Following a successful rehearsed reading at the Soho Theatre in March 2007, Salsa drew interest from numerous venues. The Old Red Lion, known for having its finger on the pulse of new writing, was a perfect fit for this punchy play. We established the Three Bird Theatre to bring this thrilling, black comedy to the London stage.

With another play by Martula, Brooklyn, opening at the King’s Head Theatre in 2008, Salsa is set to be the first in a series of hot, new US playwrights hitting the capital.

Helen Devine, Artistic Director of the Old Red Lion Theatre, says :

“We are proud to hosting the UK premiere of Martula’s work. Her unique voice will shake up the most jaded London theatre-goer.”

Ramin Gray, Associate Director, Royal Court Theatre
, says:
“Rose Martula has a quirky West Coast talent that sparkles and surprises.”

Salsa Saved the Girls is a dark comedy of family dysfunction, exploring the woes of female adolescence against a backdrop of macho jealousies. The play crackles with brash dialogue and offers a unique look at the modern American family.

“Hey, I speak the truth, missy. Make-up will never make ya pretty if you ain’t pretty in the first place . . . We can see right through that. Eventually, every man’s going have to roll over and see ya in the blazing, morning sunshine for what you really are. So Remember that.”

Long island. A sweaty summer night. Kai’s turning pirouettes. Sabrina’s rolling a “blunt”, and their mother Cali’s getting glamourous for a date. The party starts when all three of Cali’s suitors turn up—ex-hubby Louie, boyfriend Bobby and the very quirky Simon. With cocktails and conversation flowing a little too freely, the lively party quickly descends into a drunken, smoked-filled haze that exposes each character’s fears and vulnerability.

Rose Martula is a phenomenal, young talent whose distinctive writing is part of a new wave of American theatre. She was recently named one of the “50 to Watch’ playwrights” by the Dramatist Guild of America. Leon Katz, Emeritus Professor of Drama from the Yale School of Drama, calls her, “The Chekhov of her generation.”

Salsa’s premiere last summer, funded by a Warner Brothers producer, enjoyed sold-out performances and critical praise. The Los Angeles Times wrote, “Martula’s script is incisive and original.” In late 2006, her one-act Ran Wild had a star-studded run in Los Angeles. Venues including the Manhattan Theatre Club, Soho Repertory, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s company Labyrinth Theatre (New York) and The Mark Taper Forum and Geffen Playhouse (Los Angeles) have expressed interest in Martula’s work. Her infectious style is fast gaining a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic.
